Meet Rabbi Amichai Cohen

I have spent my entire adult life in education, and it has been the greatest privilege of my life.

I come from a lineage of teachers and spiritual seekers. On my Moroccan side, I am a descendant of the Kabbalist Rabbi Avraham Azulai. On my mother's side, my grandfather Hermann Gans dedicated over 70 years of his life to education. Growing up between the US and Israel taught me to understand different types of people, different ways of thinking, and different ways of opening up to wisdom.

With a Master's degree in Special Education, I co-founded an alternative school in Crown Heights, Brooklyn that grew into a major institution. I helped establish a special education school in Boca Raton, Florida, and led departments at Kesher in North Miami. I studied Kabbalah under my mentor, Rabbi Moshe Weinberger, learned from the Chassidic scholar Rabbi Yoel Kahn, and received semicha from the Israel Beit Din. I have facilitated over 10,000 Birthright Israel participants and taught tens of thousands of students worldwide.

Through all of this, I have learned something essential: teaching is not about information. It is about bringing out the light that already lives inside a person. It is about creating a space where transformation is possible.

The Lamplighter Practitioner Training exists because I believe the world needs more people who can do this. More people who can hold space, facilitate deep learning, build curriculum that opens hearts and minds, and share wisdom with skill, warmth, and authenticity. This program draws on everything I have learned in decades of education, from special ed classrooms to international stages.
