This week we began Tanya Chapter 10, the chapter on the tzaddik, the truly righteous individual. It is one of the most elevated ideas in the whole book, and I will be honest with you, this is a level that can feel very far away. But the Alter Rebbe wrote the Tanya for every single person, which means each of us has a way in.

The doorway is this: each of us carries a point of the tzaddik within, a spark of Moshe within.

Fear Becomes Trust, Reactivity Becomes Passion

A tzaddik is someone whose inner world has been so deeply transformed that fear has become trust and reactivity has become passion. Together we looked at the difference between the incomplete tzaddik, who has quieted the animal soul almost completely with only a subtle, subconscious residue remaining, and the complete tzaddik, the elevated soul who has turned all darkness into light and all bitterness into sweetness. And we saw that even our hardest energies, anger, arrogance, the need for approval, are not enemies. They are energies waiting to be redirected toward passion, channeling, and authentic self-connection.

Once You Have Tasted Truth

The most tender part of the teaching is also the most practical. Once we have tasted what it feels like to live in alignment, anything outside of that begins to feel foreign to us. When we numb, or scroll, or disconnect, the body and the nervous system feel it. That sensitivity is not a burden. It is a sign that the soul is rising. And the true work of the tzaddik, drawing G-d's kindness and light down into ordinary life, is a work each of us shares every time we live with intention.
