מ״ה- The 45 Letter Divine Name

The 45 letter name of G-d is connected to the 72 letter name. The difference is in the intensity of the revelation. The Zohar says that the 72 letter name comes from the forehead of A”K Adam Kadmon- Primordial Man which is the dimension which includes everything that existed before creation and everything that will exist until the end of time.

The name Mah is “covered” by the forehead and therefore it’s revelation is limited and dimmed in comparison to the name Av. Also, the name Av is called an old name because it is interwoven with the Ain Sof- the Infinite Divine entity. While the name Mah is called a “new name” because it the name is for the sake of post existence and ultimately achieving the Tikun (fixing) within the finite world as we will see when we get into the combination of the names Mah and Ban.

The name Mah is composed of 45 letters and it’s primary hidden value is Aleph. יוד  קא  ואו  קי

Aleph א (as we spoke about in our class on Sag) is medium between the infinite and the finite levels of existence.

The higher Yud reaches up to the infinite source, while the lower Yud draws down the infinite light into the finite world.

The process of “drawing down” is associated with the 6 emotional Sefirot called Z”A , the Zeir Anpin (small face).

For this reason the name Mah is also associated with the world of Tikun- fixing, while the name Sag is associated with the world of Tohu- chaos.

Mah actually has contradictory Hebrew meanings. On the one hand, it means “what” i.e limited amount which we can see, yet on the other hand it means “what?”. With a question mark, Mah is unknown or there would be no question.

So too, the name Mah comes from the limitless source where we ask “what?”. Yet on the other hand the light of this name descends down into the finite existence and therefore is limited becoming “what” we see is what we get.

The numerology of the name Mah -45 is also the same as Adam אדם. Adam represents the human aspect which is associated with the intellect, where as “Ish” - man is associated with the emotional aspect of man.

Intelligence is the faculty which makes the human unique in comparison to the animal kingdom. When we use reason and logic, we draw down a constructive way of interacting with the world around us. By using intelligence, we harness the potential of the universe and curate it for a higher purpose.

The name Mah is about inspiring intelligent deliberation from the Divine source as well as from within our souls in order to create positive change in the world.
