In this teaching, we dove into a transformative section of the Zohar on Parshat Pinchas, which speaks directly to the soul's journey through lifetimes—and what it takes to truly complete our mission here.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai opens with a striking statement: When a soul is reincarnated (gilgul) and fails to do its work in this lifetime, it is like deceiving the Divine image in which it was created. We are not only here to live out our present lives but also to bring healing to our past lives.

Drawing from Leviticus and the Zohar, the text describes this neglect as akin to denying a lost object’s return, failing to bring back what was misplaced in a former life. The consequences are not just spiritual—they affect which body a soul will return to in the time of resurrection. A soul that did more rectification will merit resurrection in its original body. A less-complete soul may be displaced.

The class illuminated the unique power of those who do tikkun (soul repair) with fierce sincerity—even if they were not “the highest” in previous incarnations. This is exemplified by Pinchas, who was not originally at the spiritual stature of Nadav and Avihu, sons of Aharon. Yet through his courageous act of holy zealotry, Pinchas not only rectified his own soul, but also elevated the souls of Nadav and Avihu—and became Eliyahu HaNavi, the eternal messenger of redemption.

This teaching invites us to reframe our challenges. We may not have the lofty soul roots of past tzadikim, but we are now placed at the edge of redemption, with a mission only we can fulfill. Every courageous step we take—rooted in faith and trust—can have an eternal impact.

As the Lubavitcher Rebbe taught in 1992, this generation has the power to access eternal life, not as an abstract idea, but as a lived potential in our bodies and souls.
