Zot Chanukah: The Final Sealing of Light

chanuka high holidays holidays miracles the hidden light Dec 22, 2025

We know the rhythm of the High Holidays.

On Rosh Hashanah we are written for a year of life, goodness, and blessing. On Yom Kippur it is sealed. On Hoshana Rabbah there is a second sealing. On Shemini Atzeret it is delivered.

In other words, the “closing” of the season is meant to be the end of Sukkot.

And yet, the students of the Baal Shem Tov teach something deeper: there is another sealing. A final, final sealing.

It happens on the eighth day of Chanukah: Zot Chanukah.

Not only “the last day,” but “this is Chanukah” — the essence of what Chanukah is training us to become.

When the High Holiday Energy Returns

This year we had a rare convergence: Rosh Chodesh, Chanukah, and Shabbat together. In shul, we took out three Torah scrolls.

The last time we do that kind of thing is Simchat Torah.

If you were there, you felt it. That awe. That sense of “this is not just another morning.” Three scrolls open and suddenly the heart knows: there is a court above, a deep spiritual accounting, and a profound invitation to receive.

And then there is Hallel.

We say the full Hallel on Chanukah. Even on Pesach, we do not say full Hallel every day. But Chanukah is different. Why? Because Chanukah is not only about remembering a miracle. Chanukah is about learning how to see that nature itself is miracle.

The Receptacle Is the Whole Story

I want to pause on something simple: receive the blessings.

One of the lessons I learned on this trip, standing near Iguazú Falls, is watching water pour and pour and pour without stopping. It just keeps coming. That is the shefa of Hashem.

The question is not whether Hashem wants to give. The question is whether we are able to receive.

Our container can be small. Sometimes it is limited by fear, by self-judgment, by the habit of expecting disappointment, or by living with a tight grasp on control.

Chanukah trains the vessel.

We do not only light candles and move on. The Baal Shem Tov teaches that we “listen” to the candles. We sit with the light and let it speak to us.

And what does it say?

Slow down. See. Make space. Let goodness in.

Adonai and Hallel: Elevating the Lowest World

There is a beautiful hint here.

Adonai is gematria 65. Hallel is gematria 65.

Chanukah has the power to elevate the Name that represents the revealed world, the grounded world, the world of “nature” — and lift it into praise, into illumination, into awe.

It is the inner meaning of Chanukah: the highest level and the lowest level are not opposites. They come from the same source. The physical is not a contradiction to holiness. It is a concealment waiting to be revealed.

The Zohar hints to this with a mystical wordplay: avir (air) and or (light) share the same letters, with one addition — the yud, the “God-particle,” the point of Divine presence inside the seemingly ordinary. The air itself carries the hidden yud. The world itself is filled with Him.

Chanukah candles train the eye to see the or-yud inside everything.

What Is the Sealing of Zot Chanukah?

The sealing of Zot Chanukah is not only “what will be” this year.

It is deeper:

How much do I believe in miracles?

Not miracles as something rare and dramatic, but miracles as the true nature of reality.

This is why we always read about Yosef around this time. Yosef teaches us that everything can turn in a moment. Twelve years down, and then suddenly: in a short time he is washed, dressed, and standing as viceroy. From lowest low to highest high.

That is a miracle.

But the point is that it was “within nature.” Hashem was moving the entire veil the whole time.

Zot Chanukah asks: do you truly believe Hashem can shift a situation, heal a wound, open a path, and bring good into form?

Not fantasies. Not ego cravings. Not the red Ferrari prayers.

The real prayers: healing, peace, livelihood, clarity, relationship repair, children, inner freedom, a calmer nervous system, a more settled heart, a deeper relationship with Hashem.

Sometimes we quietly decide: “Maybe I do not deserve it. Maybe this is just my lot. Maybe life has to be this way.”

That thought is not humility. That thought is judgment.

And Chanukah comes to retrain it.

Bitachon: Not My Plan, His Goodness

Someone asked me a powerful question: how do we hold bitachon when what we want might not be what Hashem is giving?

Here is the distinction:

Bitachon is not “I trust that my exact plan will happen.”

Bitachon is trust in Hashem’s goodness.

It means: I surrender my tight grip on control, and I trust that Hashem is leading me toward good — even if my ego is certain it needs it to look a particular way.

The animal soul wants safety and predictability. The godly soul wants truth and alignment. The only way to know the difference is to create space to listen: Shabbat, prayer, quiet, stepping out of the hustle, returning to your inner self.

Chanukah is chinuch. Training. Education.

It is the education of sight.

A Simple Chanukah Practice

During these last days, take three areas of your life. Do not be “cheap” with Hashem.

Choose three real prayers. For yourself, for your family, for someone you love.

Then do two things:

  1. Thank Hashem as if it is already here.
Not denial. Not pretending. Gratitude that expands the vessel and declares: “Your goodness is real.”

  2. Write it down and place it in your menorah before you put it away.
Let your menorah hold your prayers until they become revealed reality.

And then, when you light, do not rush away.

Sit with the candles.

Receive.

Let the light tell you the truth: your life is filled with miracles. The good is already pouring. Your vessel can expand. Your heart can soften. Your vision can become clear.

Zot Chanukah is the final sealing.

May we be sealed for a year of revealed goodness, and may we actually be able to receive it.
