By Rabbi Amichai Cohen

Introduction:

Embarking on a spiritual journey can be a transformative experience, especially when it leads you to the resting place of a revered sage from centuries past.

We are living in unsettling times, to say the least, and we must pull from higher powers to make it.

In my recent adventure, I had the privilege of visiting the final resting place of Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana, an enigmatic figure known for his profound teachings and contributions to Jewish mysticism. Join me as I recount the arduous yet rewarding hike that brought me to this sacred site and delve into the life of this remarkable sage and the mystical significance of the Ana b'Koach prayer associated with him.

The Challenging Ascent: Nestled amidst breathtaking natural surroundings, the resting place of Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana is not easily accessible. It requires a demanding hike through rugged terrain, a test of both physical endurance and spiritual commitment. The ascent was marked by steep trails, winding paths, and a sense of awe as the anticipation of reaching this holy destination grew.

Thankfully, I hiked with a magnificent friend and guide, Shlomo Leibowitz, a real outdoorsman, and mentch.

Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana's Life:

To truly appreciate the significance of this journey, let's explore the life of Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana. He lived during the first and second centuries CE, a period of great intellectual ferment in Jewish scholarship. Rabbi Nehunya was renowned for his mystical teachings, particularly his involvement in the "Ma'ase Merkavah," a Kabbalistic tradition focused on understanding the divine chariot described in the biblical book of Ezekiel.

Teachings and Contributions:

Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana's wisdom can be found in various ancient Jewish texts, including the Mishnah, Tosefta, and Talmud. His teachings embraced profound concepts of Jewish cosmology, divine contemplation, and the search for spiritual enlightenment. His philosophical approach influenced generations of scholars and mystics, shaping the mystical traditions that followed in his footsteps. According to many opinions, he authors the "Sefer Habahir- The Book of Splendor," which is one of the earliest Kabbalistic works.

The Ana b'Koach Prayer: One of the remarkable legacies associated with Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana is the Ana b'Koach prayer, a mystical supplication woven with profound significance. This prayer consists of seven verses, each corresponding to one of the seven days of the week. Each verse contains powerful combinations of letters and metaphysical concepts, inviting divine assistance and invoking spiritual blessings.

The Ana b'Koach prayer is believed to hold potent transformative powers, empowering individuals to connect with higher realms and transcend the mundane. Reciting and meditating upon this prayer can deepen one's spiritual awareness and forge a stronger bond with the divine.

Reaching the Resting Place: Finally, after hours of intense hiking, I arrived at the resting place of Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana. The awe-inspiring aura surrounding the site was palpable, carrying with it a sense of reverence and tranquility. The journey had been demanding, but the rewards were immeasurable.

In the presence of this hallowed ground, I reflected on the wisdom and mystical insights Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana had imparted to generations of seekers. I offered prayers of gratitude for the opportunity to connect with his legacy and contemplated the teachings that have shaped the spiritual lives of countless individuals throughout history.

Visiting the resting place of Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana was an unforgettable experience, a trek that tested my physical and spiritual limits. The challenges of the journey were surpassed by the profound connection established with the Tzadik. As I descended from the sacred site, I carried with me a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana's teachings and the mystical power of the Ana b'Koach prayer.

Embarking on such a spiritual pilgrimage can invigorate one's quest for knowledge, enlightenment, and divine connection. Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana's life and teachings remind us that the search for spiritual truth is a lifelong endeavor, transcending time and leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of seekers like myself.

A physical war is happening on the ground, and, more importantly, we are waging a spiritual war of light vs. darkness, clarity vs. confusion, and righteousness vs. evil.

Kabbalah teaches that every individual is a microcosm of the world. Therefore, what is happening to us as a collective profoundly impacts our personal lives.

The violence and hatred that we are experiencing around the world are bringing out a lot of subconscious traumas, fears, and anxiety to the surface on a large scale.

We must stand proudly in our light and shine that out into the world unapologetically and confidently.

Join us on this journey to explore Kabbalah in a way that goes beyond theory—where knowledge becomes a LIVING practice.
